Component Evaluation: Reimaging Sites of Care

Disability justice scholars have theorized and dreamed up ideas around care work and communities. Care is understood as relational and involving feelings, practices, and labour that connect people together. In disability circles, care is about collectivity and resistance to the ableist structures of capitalism. 

At the core of disability justice are ten principles that were outlined by Sins Invalid in 2015. These include: intersectionality, leadership of those most impacted, anti-capitalism, cross-movement solidarity, wholeness, sustainability, cross-disability solidarity, interdependence, collective access, and collective liberation. It is from these principles that community care networks begin to imagine new and different ways to support mental wellbeing.

Have students visualize their idea of care, claiming space, and mental wellbeing by creating a collage, map, drawing, or painting that embodies their idea care community or space. Once students have completed their visual have them share and discuss the following question in pairs:  How do your ideas around care and claiming space change or address systems of oppression?
