Taking Mad School to Another Level
Mad School is part of the larger Madness Canada Website, an activist exhibit showcase, research space, and education hub that supports academic-community collaborations. Instructors using Mad School extensively in one course, or at honours or graduate level, can also pull teaching materials from across the parent Madness Canada site. Here are some recommendations:
- The Last Asylums – transports learners into the deinstitutionalization era, in an exhibit that walks you through the dissolving walls of thirteen large Canadian psychiatric hospitals.
- CrazyMaking – students learn from young Indigenous artists about how they understand mental health, informed by colonial legacies and the need to heal.
- Still Sane – have students reflect on sculptures inscribed with tales of an era when homosexuality was considered a psychiatric illness.
